Poche volte un disco riesce a spiazzarmi. E questo Imajca, dell’artista campano Antonio Giorgio, c’è riuscito!!! Chiaramente nell’accezione positiva del termine dato che, a valle di svariati ascolti, sento ancora la necessità di far partire il tasto play del cd per scoprire qualche nuovo particolare e per mutare le mie impressioni su un determinato pezzo… E’ vero, ce ne occupiamo in ritardo rispetto alla data di uscita, ma sarebbe davvero un delitto non parlarne date le sue particolarità che lo rendono un lavoro di caratura superiore alla media. A sei anni dal precedente lavoro, Golden Metal, Antonio Giorgio torna con un’opera ricca, complessa, articolata, che occupa tutto lo spazio disponibile su cd (più di 73 minuti) e che, al contrario di molte releases di questo stampo che nel tempo hanno preso una tangente tutta loro risultando abbastanza stucchevoli, riscopre tutto quel buon sound che a noi è sempre piaciuto. Insomma, Imajca prende le mosse (attenzione non copia…) dal metal teatrale epico dei Virgin Steele e drammatico dei Savatage, lo mischia con partiture metal progressive a la Dream Theater e Kamelot, con aperture ariose come quelle che ogni tanto si sentono nelle composizioni più lunghe di un certo King Diamond o cupissime come quelle dei Candlemass e con parti cantate sopra armonie malmsteeniane. Per quanto appena detto, potete quindi immaginare lo stupore ma anche il piacevole divertissement nell’individuare, di volta in volta, questi particolari. L’opera è divisa in tre atti e già il brano di apertura, Wisdom Of Imagination, dura ben dodici minuti!!! Come definirlo, se non un vero e proprio tour de force compositivo dove atmosfere, umori, tempi e sonorità si alternano mettendo in mostra tutto il talento di Antonio, che ha concepito l’opera partendo dal supporto strumentale del fido chitarrista Luca Gagnoni, che lo accompagna dalla precedente line up, con la collaborazione di ben quindici musicisti, tra cui i noti Diego Banchero (Segno Del Comando) e Steve Vawamas (Mastercastle, Athlantis, Shadows Of Steel) al basso, Gabriels alle tastiere, Claudia Beltrame dei Degrees Of Truth in un duetto vocale nella suadente In Your Eyes (Emerald Light), Mark Vanderbilt (primo vocalist dei Kamelot) su I Will Remember (cover dei Queensryche), Ian Parry su Until Kingdom Come (presente come digital bonus cui viene fornito il link per scaricarla). Il concept riguarda il connubio tra arte e magia ed è dettagliatamente spiegato nel ricchissimo libretto, corredato inoltre dei testi e delle foto di tutti i musicisti, rinchiuso in una splendida confezione digipack, che si distingue per un artwork magnifico e molto simbolico. Aggiungiamo che l’album è pubblicato da Andromeda Relix, etichetta che sappiamo essere molto oculata nella scelta delle sue pubblicazioni, un marchio di garanzia. Voto: 8/10 Salvatore Mazzarella Rarely does an album manage to surprise me. And this Imajca, by the Campanian artist Antonio Giorgio, has succeeded!!! Clearly in the positive sense of the term, since, after several listens, I still feel the need to press play on the CD to discover some new detail and to change my impressions of a particular piece... It's true, we're covering it late with respect to the release date, but it would be a real crime not to talk about it given its unique features that make it a work of above-average caliber. Six years after his previous work, Golden Metal, Antonio Giorgio returns with a rich, complex, and multifaceted work that fills the entire available space on the CD (over 73 minutes) and which, unlike many releases of this ilk that over time have gone off on their own tangent and become rather cloying, rediscovers all that good sound we've always loved. In short, Imajca takes its cue (be careful not to copy...) from the epic theatrical metal of Virgin Steele and the dramatic metal of Savatage, mixing it with progressive metal scores à la Dream Theater and Kamelot, with airy openings like those occasionally heard in the longer compositions of a certain King Diamond or very dark ones like those of Candlemass and with sung parts over Malmsteenian harmonies. Given what has just been said, you can imagine the amazement and also the pleasant amusement in identifying these details from time to time. The opera is divided into three acts, and the opening piece, Wisdom of Imagination, already lasts a full twelve minutes! How else to define it than as a true compositional tour de force where atmospheres, moods, tempos and sounds alternate, showcasing all the talent of Antonio, who conceived the work starting from the instrumental support of his faithful guitarist Luca Gagnoni, who has accompanied him since the previous lineup, with the collaboration of no less than fifteen musicians, including the well-known Diego Banchero (Segno Del Comando) and Steve Vawamas (Mastercastle, Athlantis, Shadows Of Steel) on bass, Gabriels on keyboards, Claudia Beltrame of Degrees Of Truth in a vocal duet on the persuasive In Your Eyes (Emerald Light), Mark Vanderbilt (first vocalist of Kamelot) on I Will Remember (a Queensryche cover), Ian Parry on Until Kingdom Come (present as a digital bonus for which the link to download it is provided). The concept revolves around the union of art and magic and is explained in detail in the lavish booklet, which also features lyrics and photos of all the musicians. The album is housed in a splendid digipack, distinguished by magnificent and highly symbolic artwork. The album is published by Andromeda Relix, a label we know to be very careful in its selection of releases, a hallmark of quality. Rating: 8/10 Salvatore Mazzarella
