Chi conosce lo scribacchino di turno, sa che il power- sympho metal non è il genere che più gli si addice e che quindi, nell'affrontare la musica proposta da Antonio Giorgio e la sua band, si ha sempre un po' di timore dei soliti triti e ritriti clichè. Ma già dalle influenze dichiarate dall'artista irpino, ossia Kamelot, Dokken, Virgin Steele e Conception tra gli altri, il panorama non sembra così fosco, e lo è ancor di meno dopo aver ascoltato quella che è la sua prima fatica discografica, ossia quel 'Golden Metal' già recensito su queste pagine. Fatica si diceva prima e così è stato dopo che Antonio si era proposto con il suo demo ben tre anni fa, quando chi vi sta scrivendo trattava la rubrica sui demo per una testata cartacea ora in stand-by, tuttavia questa fatica si è tramutata in energia positiva per il loquace - leggete l'intevista e capirete perchè - singer campano, che incurante di critiche gratuite e di continui andirivieni tra i pur validi session men che lo hanno coadiuvato, ha continuato per la sua strada, raggiungendo il suo scopo, ossia tramutare in musica il suo pensiero, partendo da William Blake per arrivare a David DeFeis. Ma ora, lasciamo spazio alle sue parole...

HS: Ciao Antonio, vuoi presentarti ai lettori di Hardsounds?

Certo e con molto piacere.Innanzitutto ciao a te Giorgio e a tutti i lettori di Hardosunds! Sono un cantante/compositore che viene dall’Irpinia(Lioni è il mio paese nativo)e che negli anni ha fatto varie cose come un bel po’ di demo e anche inusuali per lunghezza e contenuti,un album di metal covers autoprodotto,la partecipazione al Tributo Ufficiale alla Epic Cult band Virgin Steele con il brano”I Will Come for You” e diversi provini per bands nazionali e  internazionali come Lost Horizon,Heimdall, Dreamscape, Icycore, Adagio,Beyond Twilight,Royal Hunt,Silent Force,Fifth Angel, Conception,fino a giungere a quello più significativo,ossia nel 2010/2011 per i Kamelot di Thomas Youngblood,per i quali sono stato in”stand-by”per un più di un anno per poi essere scartato anche per via di un mio comportamento un po’ sopra le righe e polemico,ed ammetto di aver un po’ esagerato in tal senso,ma d’altronde posseggo un carattere  verace,schietto e onesto e questo mi porta a dire cose che magari a posteriori avrei potuto evitare,ma tant’è siamo qui a parlare del mio effettivo debutto che sarà pubblicato a breve,ossia”Golden Metal(the Quest for the Inner Glory)",album dalla lunga  e travagliata preparazione,anche per via dei molti musicisti coinvolti e di cui sono molto orgoglioso poiché si tratta dell’album di una vita,con songs composte anche diversi annetti fa.Un album su cui punto molto,per non dire tutto!

HS.: Ci puoi spiegare cosa significa il concetto di “Golden Metal” e qual è la storia, il concept che sta dietro al disco?

Il Golden Metal è un concetto che ho messo a punto ben 13 anni fa leggendo il mio autore preferito,Sir William Blake e il suo poema più epico e ambizioso,”Jerusalem”, contenente una frase filosofica che mi ha ispirato molto in tal senso,ossia”Metal is Gnosis”,ossia “Metallo è Conoscenza”.Ora,il grande bardo non sapeva ovviamente che sarebbe nato un genere nel futuro come il Metal,ma essendo lui stesso un cantore dei suoi poemi credo avesse inconsciamente carpito l’Essenza del Metal,che è una musica profetica e visionaria che possiamo anche immaginare come la Colonna Sonora immaginaria di quella che sarà l’Apocalisse o una delle Apocalissi…Oltre a Blake,un’altra fonte d’ispirazione fortissima fu l’Alchimia,che essendo “Scienza dei Metalli”ha in sé il concetto simbolico/metaforico di ciò che fa grande questa musica e ovviamente come gli Alchimisti cercavano l’Oro Spirituale attraverso le loro complesse e ermetiche operazioni,così i musicisti Metal più ispirati cercano di ricavare l’Oro Musicale attraverso le loro complesse alchimie,purificando i metalli vili in nobili e l’Oro è il Metallo più Nobile & Puro…uscendo dalla metafora,il Golden Metal per me è un modo per essere originale in un genere che sembra aver detto tutto,ma che in realtà è immortale come qualsiasi Grande Musica.Non so se questo sarà il mio”Magnum Opus”,la Grande Opera degli alchimisti,ma di certo è un album molto importante per me,con un concept in parte autobiografico che ricalca varie fasi(alchemiche)della mia vita  privata e artistica,alcune oscure e altre più solari e positive(proprio come sono le fasi alchemiche della nigredo,rubedo,albedo etc),fino a giungere circolarmente ad un’ideale Età dell’Oro della Mente e dello Spirito che non ha tempo,spazio e luogo. Ho creato un alter ego per il concept,Gabriel Raven,che è un musicista in cerca dell’Ultima Verità e della Pace Interiore sia nel campo sentimentale che in quello artistico.E’ un’Eterna Ricerca che non ha mai reale fine e quest’album è un inizio e una fine nel contempo,come un serpente che si morde la coda.

HS.: Il tuo modo di cantare ricalca quello di due grandi quali Roy Khan e Don Dokken, come già puntualizzato in fase di recensione. Puoi parlarci dell’influenza che hanno avuto su di te?

Ti ringrazio per il lusinghiero paragone con questi due mostri sacri del Metal Melodico che in effetti hanno un’influenza su di me come molti altri come Geoff Tate,Tony Martin,Ronnie James Dio,David Defeis,Lou Gramm,Gary Hughes,James Labrie,Daniel Heiman,Andy Engberg ,Bruce Dickinson,Rob Halford,Alice Cooper solo per citarne alcuni,ma la cosa più importante per me è avere uno stile unico e riconoscibile come loro stessi, evitando appunto di”ricalcare”troppo le loro orme.Quello che ammiro dei grandi singers è il fatto di possedere uno stile originale e in questo senso non ho un cantante preferito(idem per bands e artisti).Ognuno deve trovare e cercare il proprio”Oro Interiore”:-D Ad ogni modo parlando nello specifico di un singer come Roy Khan,devo ammettere che per me è stato in un certo periodo della mia vita una specie di fratello maggiore per via di alcune esperienze in comune come una storia d’amore importante andata a male.Eravamo sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda e anche le sue liriche mi erano di conforto,oltre ad una versatilità che ammiravo particolarmente del singer norvegese,capace di passare da uno stile quasi pop ad uno addirittura quasi Black-Metal(pensa alla sua estemporanea partecipazione al progetto Black dell’ex-bassista dei Conception Ingar Amlien nei suoi “luciferini”Crest of Darkness e ad alcune cose dark dei Conception & Kamelot).    Don Dokken invece con il suo stile sognante,romantico e potente, è un singer basilare per chiunque voglia avere un approccio elegante e melodico al Metal in stile eightes,il”Class-Metal”dei Dokken(termine molto bello  e fantasioso coniato dal grande giornalista Beppe Riva,come saprai meglio di me,dopo l’ascolto dei primi albums della band)ha fatto scuola e ancora oggi è termine di paragone per le bands più melodiche e raffinate.

HS.: Parlando in privato con te, hai evidenziato come il tuo modo di concepire  il “gruppo” che ti accompagna sia simile a quello che aveva David Bowie, ossia piena libertà, anche artistica, vuoi parlarcene?

Questa è una domanda molto interessante(come le altre sia chiaro),grazie per averla pensata GiorgioJTi rispondo dicendo che credo che la lunga e variegata carriera del visionario rocker inglese è sicuramente altra fonte d’ispirazione per chi cerchi di avere sempre nuovi stimoli dai propri futuri albums/composizioni.Infatti è mia ferma intenzione non ripetermi nel futuro,ogni album avrà un suo perché e una sua unicità che non ricalcherà affatto quanto fatto in precedenza,se non per alcuni collegamenti testuali e contenutistici con leit-motiv e  melodie/riff che potranno ripresentarsi in forma diversa.”Golden Metal”è solo l’inizio e sarà un unicum nella mia spero lunga discografia,il resto veleggerà verso altri lidi e mari che non avranno molto in comune tra loro se non una certa cifra stilistica. In tal senso anche i “compagni di viaggio”potranno cambiare o ci si potrà ritrovare a varcare nuove soglie.Aspettati l’inaspettato!

HS.: La versione “definitiva” di ‘Golden Metal’ è in dirittura d’arrivo, quale sarà l’etichetta che lo pubblicherà e chi si occuperà dell’artwork?

Ovviamente la versione che hai recensito tu era solo un promo,seppur già piuttosto definita.Sono state fatte ulteriori modifiche e migliorie,ci saranno altri 4 lunghi brani e se ci sarà un’edizione limitata anche un cd bonus di Metal Covers a titolo”Tales from Heaven & Hell”,che raccoglie anche brani registrati negli anni per provini e tributi vari.  Sulla questione label ci sarà una bella “unione/alleanza”,come d’altronde è stato per i musicisti,il mio “Golden Metal Team”(ragazzi provienenti da bands valide e valorose come Fogalord,Veil of Conspiracy/ex-Astral Domine,Thunderproject/Blue Rose,Blaze of Sorrow etc):ho quasi raggiunto l’accordo definitivo con la label di un’importante giornalista italiano che ammiro dai tempi di”Metal Shock”(lascio ai lettori più attempati intuire chi possa essere) e per l’occasione creerò la mia label personale AGM Productions che sarà la co-label.Per l’artwork invece mi avvarrò della collaborazione di Gianluca Carlini dei Great Master(www.jahnvision.com)che lavora molta per la Underground Symphony di Maurizio Chiarello.Di sicuro la parte grafica sarà un gradevole e valido corredo alla vena visionaria e epica delle songs  e del loro concept”alchemico/fantastico/autobiografico”.

HS.: Sei molto legato ai Virgin Steele e al suo leader David DeFeis, tanto da partecipare attivamente al gruppo sulla band di ‘Noble Savage’. Ci parli dell’influenza che hanno avuto sul tuo modo di comporre e di interpretare i tuoi brani?

David Defeis per me è l’equivalente in musica di Sir William Blake(non soltanto per l’omonimia del nome del concept”The Marriage of Heaven & Hell”con il capolavoro filosofico del bardo)e non scherzo!E’ a tutti gli effetti una specie di mentore artistico/musicale dai tempi dei miei primi demo e ne sono molto onorato.Le sue parole  sul mio operato mi sono stato di grande conforto e forza e di certo non l’ho dimenticato.Partecipare al tributo della sua grande band  e cantare un capolavoro di canzone romantica e epica come “I Will Come for You”è stato un vero onore & privilegio, conscio che non potrò mai raggiungere la sua incredibile maestria compositiva, considerandolo uno dei veri Geni e Innovatori non soltanto dell’Epic Metal,di cui è insieme ai Manowar & ai Manilla Road di Mark Shelton uno dei padri putativi,ma del Metal e del Rock in generale.Okay,oggi non canta più come un tempo e anche la sua vena compositiva non è più “dorata”come un tempo,ma rimane una di quelle figure inattaccabili e imperiose del nostro amato e eterno Metal,che il tempo non scalfirà e che sarà ispirativa fino alla fine dei suoi giorni.E poi ha anche origini italiane come Ed Pursino(addirittura delle mie parti!),quindi buon sangue non mente:-D Spero davvero di collaborare,suoi impegni permettendo,in futuro o anche registrare un mio Tributo personale alla band e a lui stesso.Glielo devo!!!

HS.: Italian Metal, questione spinosa e secondo me, ancora in alto mare. Cosa ne pensi da artista inserito in questo contesto? E quali sono le band che lo possono “sdoganare” definitivamente?

Questione complicata come asserisci tu stesso.                                                           Indubbiamente il Metal tricolore ha avuto una crescita esponenziale in fatto di bands e produzioni negli ultimi vent’anni,tuttavia sono ancora molte le lacune che lo caratterizzano,sia in termini di strutture live per le bands emergenti e più o meno affermate,che per l’aspetto professionale in vari aspetti del music business,tant’è vero che le bands più di successo come Lacuna Coil & Rhapsody(nelle varie incarnazioni/ denominazioni)si sono rivolte all’estero e a un paese egemone e iper-organizzato come la Germania per concretizzare le loro ambizioni e soprattutto gli ultimi si fa fatica a indicarli come “Metal tricolore”considerata l’ampia partecipazione di musicisti e produttori esteri.Se c’è una cosa che mi preme sottolineare di”GM” è che è al 100 % un prodotto di Metallo Italico,con musicisti tutti provenienti dall’area nazionale (nessuna partecipazione estera”internettata”di musicisti più o meno famosi),prodotto da me e dai due leaders dei Fogalord,ossia dalla mente compositiva della band Daniele Bisi/Dany All e dal talentuoso giovane drummer Nicolò Bernini(anche nei  death-metallers Blaze of Sorrow tra le sue altre bands) e con il supporto di labels altrettanto italiche.Ciò che non è mai mancato a noi italiani è senz’altro l’Immaginazione e la Creatività,che poi sono l’ossatura di una qualsiasi Opera d’Arte valida e ispirata.La sola tecnica/ forma/ professionalità  non basta. Tuttavia essendo cantato in inglese e visti i miei trascorsi internazionali,è ovvio che si rivolge anche e soprattutto alla platea internazionale e non potrebbe essere altrimenti,ma rimane la fierezza di avere un prodotto davvero e interamente italiano.

HS.: Domanda un po’ a trabocchetto, quali sono i gruppi o se preferisci gli album di generi diversi dal “tuo” epic-symphonic? Parlo di thrash, death, black, ma anche di glam, street e aor, di solito gli artisti coinvolti nel genere che proponi sono molto conservatori…

Altra bella domandaJ!                                                                                                Come sai sono un divoratore di Metal a 360°(e di musica di ogni genere)e faccio fatica a inquadrarmi in un genere ben preciso,tant’è che in un certo qual modo l’ho creato io stesso,fermo restando che il GM non è un genere,ma una”Visione”.    

In genere chi ascolta Metal è molto devoto al genere e non potrebbe essere altrimenti,il Metal è come la Spada per il Cavaliere o il Guerriero,l’eterna compagna fedele che non ti abbandona mai,una cosa che altri estranei al genere fanno fatica a capire o addirittura accettare. Il GM è la spada forgiata da me per meJ ,dopo aver appreso i”Segreti dell’Acciao”da tutti i miei innumerevoli e variopinti ascolti metallici.Facendo comunque presente che nell’area “Epic/Symphonic”i miei albums preferiti sono i doppi concepts di Virgin Steele & Kamelot “The Marriage of Heaven & Hell I & II”e “Epica/The Black Halo”,faccio uno spero esaustivo elenco per sottogenere di  ogni tipo di Metal con il mio album preferito per settore(dura decisione!):

 HS.: Hai sempre dato spazio alle tue interpretazioni di brani di altri artisti: Kamelot, Dokken e Virgin Steele mi sembrano “fisiologici”, ma avevi interpretato in maniera egregia anche “Tears Of The Dragon” di Bruce Dickinson, oltre a “The Mission” dei Queensryche e altre. Lo farai ancora in futuro?

Penso proprio che la mia vena interpretativa non si esaurirà facilmente.                       Di fatto nasco come interprete e cantante e ovviamente per un singer che si rispetti l’interpretazione di materiale altrui fatta in maniera creativa e personale,ma senza tradire il messaggio originale,semmai ampliandolo e rendendolo in un certo qual modo “nuovo”,sia qualcosa di basilare e vitale:c’è anche chi dice che la massima espressione per un cantante sia interpretare al meglio materiale altrui!E’ la curiosità di visitare luoghi a te non familiari,la curiosità del viaggiatore e dell’esploratore,che ti porta a rifare ciò che già esiste in una nuova veste.E’ come prendere un vestito e farlo tuo indossandolo come se fosse stato sempre tuo.Pensa ad uno come Jorn Lande che continua a omaggiare le sue  fonti d’ispirazione con album di covers a volte riusciti,a volte meno,ma comunque fatti in maniera costante.E’ un singer di razza e tale mi sono sempre sentito anche io,nel mio piccolo.Solo che preferisco ricreare e rendere più originale il tutto,cambiando anche tonalità e “taglia”,come se le songs fossero state scritte per la mia particolare timbrica e estensione.In questo non ho limiti e credo che “esplorerò” ancora molto questo lato di me,d’altronde anche i miei brani ne vengono arricchiti.

HS.: E  adesso, una domanda che inverte le parti, cosa chiederesti a chi scrive di metal, sia webzine che carta stampata? Hai campo libero…

Le belle domande continuanoJChiederei di continuare a supportare gli artisti e la scena nostrana,ma senza campanilismi e prese di posizione per partito preso.Vanno esaltati quelli che hanno qualcosa di davvero nuovo da proporre e che non ci si rifugi troppo in quel che di bello è stato fatto in passato,la chiave è sempre il FUTURO.Siamo qui per cercare nuove strade,non per ricalcare quanto di buono è stato già fatto,pur facendo tesoro e trovando ispirazione in esso.

HS-Sempre a proposito dei Virgin Steele,parlaci del Tributo”By the Gods-a Noble Tribute to Virgin Steele” a cui hai partecipato.

E’ stata un’esperienza molto importante e a tutti gli effetti è il mio debutto ufficiale, registrato nel 2010 e venuto alla luce solo l’anno scorso tramite la piccola Majestic Metal Records del mio amico statunitense Matthew Knight degli Epic Metallers Eternal Winter e uscito solo negli States.Fu Matt stesso ad invitarmi tramite myspace credo intorno al 2009 scoprendo la mia voce su questa piattaforma,insieme alla mia dichiarata passione per Defeis e soci.Ci sono tante bands interessanti della scena più o meno underground mondiale,tra cui i più affermati sono i danesi Iron Fire di Martin Steene(ex-Force of Evil in compagnia di membri dei Mercyful Fate),i teutonici Wizard e i polacchi Crystal Viper e l’altra band italiana sono i siciliani Noble Savage(band che prende il nome dal primo capolavoro di Defeis e soci).Ho registrato il brano con i bolognesi Dreamsteel,band oggi dedita a sonorità più elettroniche e meno Metal,tuttavia tutti buoni musicisti.Chi voglia procurarsi una copia può farlo visitando la pagina www.majesticmetalrecords.com .C’è un booklet scritto da David Defeis che descrive ogni interpretazione delle bands dei suoi classici e l’artwork è curato dallo stesso autore delle ultime covers dei Virgin Steele: album essenziale per i fans della band.

HS-Qual è la tua professione nella vita di tutti i giorni?

Esercito il lavoro di insegnante di lettere,ma devo dire che non è la massima aspirazione e fortunatamente mi lascia un sacco di tempo libero da dedicare alla Musica e all’Arte in generale.La Musica è il mio vero lavoro o meglio impegno quotidiano,dedicao a lei buona parte delle mie energie creative e come diceva il mistico indiano Tagore è sicuramente la Regina delle Arti.Non è mai stato un hobby o un passatempo per me,ma una vera e propria missione e elevazione dello spirito. Ultimamente sto cercando anche di migliorarmi come musicista in quanto tale,studiando meglio chitarra e tastiera,dopo aver approfondito il mio strumento principale che è la mia voce.Non si finisce mai d’imparare e scoprire cose nuove. 

HS-Domanda classica:se dovessi andare su un’isola deserta quale libro,film,fumetto,disco non metal porteresti con te?

Scelta difficile come sempre,ma anche divertenteJ. Questa è la mia scelta:

Antonio Giorgio “Golden Metal-Promo 2016”  (GMKR)

Chi vi scrive ha già avuto a che fare con la musica di questo volenteroso singer, compositore e arrangiatore campano, segnatamente da Lioni in provincia di Avellino, avendo recensito il suo demo ed il suo album di cover per un'altra testata. Ora riesce, seppur con un promo che non è ancora la versione definitiva dell'album, a far conoscere i suoi pezzi inediti per cui, credeteci, ha sudato le proverbiali sette camicie. Circondatosi di musicisti più o meno conosciuti, ma validi, Antonio realizza questo suo concept riguardante l'aspetto dorato del metal e corredato da una storia sullo stile di quella ideata dai Savatage per 'Streets'. Di questo e del significato del”Golden Metal”ne parleremo direttamente con lui in una prossima intervista; qui analizziamo i suoi brani e quelle cover a cui è particolarmente legato, in particolar modo "The Spell" dei Kamelot da 'Karma', band per la quale ha sostenuto un provino nel momento in cui cercavano il sostituto di Roy Khan, ma anche "I Will Come For You" dei Virgin Steele, brano che è contenuto nel tributo alla band di David DeFeis 'By The Gods - A Noble Tribute To Virgin Steele', ed originariamente apertura di quel capolavoro che è 'The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell -Part 1'. Ma come dicevamo c'è anche farina del suo sacco ed è tanta, a cominciare dall'opener "Golden Metal" divisa in quattro parti, una pièce magniloquente quanto il titolo e piena di cambi d'umore – nonché di tempi - nella quale si presenta in maniera egregia la sua voce, calda e sofferta, in bilico tra quel Roy Khan che avrebbe potuto rimpiazzare e il Don Dokken dei bei tempi - non per niente nell'album c'è una riuscitissima cover di "Alone Again" da 'Tooth And Nail' - seguita da quella "Lost And Lonely" che conferma quanto appena scritto. Tra le varie intro che si susseguono c'è il tempo per un pezzo che colpisce più di altri, ossia "Luminous Demons", condotta da un riff potente e paradossalmente "moderno", cosa che fa svettare il brano stesso sopra agli altri proprio perchè non ricalca quegli stereotipi cari alla concezione che si ha adesso di epic metal; infine "Keeper Of Truth" chiude gli inediti con una spruzzata di power metal che, a lungo andare, fa la sua bella figura. L'unica nota stonata è la cover di "Heaven And Hell": siamo tutti d'accordo sul fatto che cimentarsi con un classico del genere è un rischio, ed è anche vero che Antonio lo corre. Il problema è che il risultato finale è discutibile, non fosse altro che inserire delle tastiere che coprono il riff portante, forse per colpa del mixing non definitivo, è un errore abbastanza evidente poiché alla fine il risultato è quanto di più lontano dall'oscura minacciosità originale. In definitiva“Golden Metal”è un buon esempio di come si possa fare del metal sinfonico ed epico, e sapendo di quante frecce dispone nella sua faretra il buon Antonio, siamo sicuri che nei suoi prossimi progetti - e sono tanti - ci stupirà ancora di più di quanto non abbia fatto finora.

IN THE TEMPLE OF NOBLE METAL

INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY ANTONIO GIORGIO FOR THE ITALIAN MAGAZINE "FENIX"(PUBLISHED IN THE YEAR 2011)

1-Ciao David!It’s a real pleasure to talk with you for this unusual magazine for Virgin Steele & Metal Music. 

ANSWER: Cheers and Mille Grazie...It is my pleasure to speak with you....

Tell me about the last great album ”The Black Light Bacchanalia” a title that sounds like ”The Divine Comedy”of Dante right?

ANSWER: I was not thinking of the Divine Comedy when I came up with the title. It was actually part of a lyric that I was writing for another song, but it struck me as a nice title for the new collection of songs I had, and it later came to me that perhaps in some way it could be construed as a phrase that sums up this crazy world and life as we now know it, in the same sense that the phrase Divine Comedy sums up life in all its insanity. Dante's work was originally just called The Comedia....it was later on that writers critics and translators tacked on the "Divine" part of the phrase.

With the phrase/title, “The Black Light Bacchanalia”, I am speaking about Life and all its attendant drama, aches, & pains, pathos, joys & sorrows. But by that phrase I really mean “The Great Reversal”. Where when one culture conquers another, the deities of the conquered people become the demons of the conquerors religion. Everything is turned upside down…topsy-turvy. This is essentially what happened to Paganism & Gnosticism. The Pagans were killed off, and their worship of Bacchus/Dionysus with their bacchanalias was suppressed. But...in the glow of the Black Light things that are white are illuminated... the other colors fade into the shadows…The Pagans went underground….

2-Have you seen the movie “Agora”,a movie about the martyred figure of Hypazia, philosopher & scientist persecuted by fanatics of the christian fundamentalism in Alexandria?         

ANSWER: No I have not seen that movie...                                       
...I think that  there’s a trait d’union with the rebel & pagan themes of the last two albums of VS.             

ANSWER: Many years ago I read about the life of Hypatia and I do reference the sadness of her situation in one of the tracks, but what I am actually doing on these last 2 albums is connecting the plight of various real historical women, plus various Goddesses, to a real live, living, breathing 21st Century woman in order to express the difficulty that women have had throughout the ages...I am trying to express the condition of the "universal" female and discuss what happened to her role in society over time. The album continues the tale I began on the “Visions Of Eden” album, and brings those elements to their conclusion, with the death of Lilith (in TO CROWN THEM WITH HALOS), & also God finally lamenting all the damage he has done & the havoc he has wrought in ETERNAL REGRET. As I mentioned, I do equate Lilith with Hypatia( the ancient Pagan astronomer/philosopher of Alexandria, who was murdered by Monks) but also Joan Of Arc, and & Lyzebel, (a Sumerian Queen who most people know as Jezebel), (but that name is a perversion of the original Lyzebel, which means Baal is exalted) (She too was murdered), as well as all the various Goddess figures like Hecate, Isis, Innana, Tiamat, Sophia, Mary, etc..... I continue the discussion of the death of Paganism and the eradication of the Female Goddess Principle due to the rise of the Mountain-Fire-Father God, but I go further on this album with discussing the rise of “organized” religion and its mark upon Paganism, and the subsequent coming of the Dark Ages. However, that being said, I am really discussing today’s Dark Ages, (not merely medieval Europe's dark ages), and the rise of fundamentalism in all walks of Life, not only religion, but politics, and everywhere else. And ultimately the album is really about Rebellion. Rebellion against authority, God, government, whatever…. etc….This is quite clear in songs like THE ORPHEUS TABOO. 
Orpheus defies Hades and looks back before entering the upper world, and so...loses his wife...Adam & Eve lose the Garden when they eat the apple...But...in the end they gain something. That something is only known to each individual. I don’t believe that anyone should tell another person what to do or how to live. We should instinctively know how to act according to our own nature’s...I say Fuck you to all that authoritarian bullshit...

3-In the Metal scene we can see a lot of different styles & genres that I see like the artistic movements of different ages.You call your style in many ways & your favourite is “Barbaric-Romantic”,but we can see this definition a derivation from the most usual EPIC METAL,a derivation of the Epic Culture & Poetry born with Homerus. Tell me your opinion about Epic-Metal & your favourite & most influential bands in this specific & noble  Metal Style.        

ANSWER: When I discuss the terms I use to describe what I do with VIRGIN STEELE, I am referring to the Music and how it sounds, and the types of chords/harmonies that I like to use.

Yes, I do define what we do in VIRGIN STEELE, as Barbaric-Romantic, Epic Metal. This is a category all to itself, and we are the only Group in this genre. This style of Music has its roots in several places. One place is the Blues, and the other is “Classical” Music, especially 19th century Music such as Chopin, & Debussy. It can be Symphonic with all sorts of orchestration or it can be just piano or acoustic guitar and a vocal. It is a Music that has far reaching ambitions. For me what I call “True Metal” or what I consider to be the kind of “Barbaric-Romantic” Music we do has a sound that I call the "Bones Of The Mountain" sound. This is a sound that has earthy, primitive elements, themes & riffs based around the modes, (the 7 ancient modes that is) the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolidian, Aeolian, Locrian and occasionally the Ionian, but it also incorporates the larger extended harmonies of the 9th, 11th and 13th chords, as found in the "Romantic" and Impressionistic Schools of classical music and Jazz. It runs the gamut from Gregorian chant to Stravinsky! This sound is full bodied, & rich, containing a solid rock base, with jagged peaks, and volcanic force. But in addition to the kinds of chords and melodies used, what makes it Metal for me is also its delivery. How the Music is executed means quite a lot! Is it put forth with a thrust, a swagger an attitude of total command? What is the intent? For it to be True Metal, it must be full bore hardcore to the hilt kind of playing. There must be reckless abandon combined with precision. There must be freedom, savagery, urgency, fearlessness, and ferocity. Even if one is playing a slow plodding doom oriented number, or a type of Metal balled, each note must have total commitment, and must be performed as if it was to be the last note ever performed before the entire Universe goes up in Flames! True Metal is a Religion, a Spirituality based on all the finer and nobler things in Life. It can show one a code or way to live by. It can teach, and it can heal. Intent is everything! If you really go for it, it doesn't matter if you hit a few wrong notes on your road to greatness and Immortality! Passion, commitment and intent are everything.

In discussing this Music that we do and all quality Metal in general, for me the inherent quality that is built into a composition is what makes a song “heavy”, or a Metal song. Some music is full of "sound & fury, signifying absolutely nothing". To me Metal is so much more than just loud guitars and exploding drums. If you think about it, even Punk has that. For me Metal is a special kind of harmonic & melodic vocabulary, a special phrasing and inflection that exists even when performing this music on an acoustic guitar or piano. Metal is far more than a cranked up Marshall amp and lyrics about dragons or elves. It is a Philosophy, a Spiritual quest, and a life long commitment to strength, honor, dignity and maintaining one’s place in the world in the face of adversity. As I said earlier, for me Metal, (or at least what we do), comes from this combination of the Blues, Gregorian chant, Classical & Operatic elements and of course Hard Rock. The musical vocabulary that I use in the songs of VIRGIN STEELE, are all these things and more. Even a very quiet track like “IPHIGENIA IN HADES”, from THE HOUSE OF ATREUS ACT 1, or GOD ABOVE GOD from VISIONS OF EDEN, is still Metal, in that it contains the phrasing, the intent and the ATTITUDE of Metal. I always try to write songs that I feel what I call “blood related to”…they come from the depths of my Mind, Body & Spirit. I try to make each one a universe unto itself…this takes time and this takes life…Living and exposing yourself to all that Life offers…the good, the bad & the ugly.

In terms of the Poetic side of the lyrics...this probably comes from the Theater. I was born into a Theatrical & Musical household. My Father was and still is a producer, director and actor. Growing up I watched his rehearsals and performances of everything from Greek Drama, to Shakespeare, to Edward Albee...Watching these productions lead me to start reading all the various Myths I could lay my hands on.  
The Myths have always been all around me in my Life. That World always seems ever present to me…always there in open sight.

To fully get what I am going on about...remember...our "Manifesto" is:

To truly live, to drink the new Wine, to bathe in new Waters both strange and beautiful, to embrace what was lost and what may be found, this… is the Spirit which drives our passion ever onward!

4-I really appreciate the progression of your band through the years. The first & the last album seem to come from totally different bands,but the “Epic Spirit”is the Leit-Motiv that has never abandoned the band & a trademark of Integrity & Honesty. I see a lot of bands,famous or not,that betray their Integrity chasing the trends & the taste of fans.  What’s your secret of your Genuiness? 

ANSWER: Thanks so very much! I really appreciate your kindness...
I think the core of what we do today was there on the first album although in a more pre-natal form...It really blossomed on the Noble Savage album and all the subsequent albums kept developing & taking the style to new places. If there is any "secret", it is really simply about always being honest, and always trying to learn more about Life, Music, & the World at large, and having the Passion to document all those experiences in sound and word.

I have always consciously tried to keep moving forward. It has been my quest to keep trying to redefine what Metal can be, and constantly try to bring in new elements to help make the Music grow. I never want to become stagnant or musically irrelevant. I believe in furthering the cause and the case for this Music, and I push myself to the brink to bring forth new creations that are fresh, alive and forward thinking. 

Our approach or attempt has always been not to craft a “career”, but to create a “Way Of Life” that would sustain us, give shape and meaning to our existence, and be the guide through our time on the Earth. To make one’s Life a work of Art, that... was the point. I believe that goal has been achieved. And that is still the plan for the future. To keep going, to try to always make Life worth living, to keep creative regardless of how successful or unsuccessful it all is business wise. That is meaningless. What is important is the Life, the creative process, the Work crafted. The lives touched along the way…the communication.

To me success is measured in musical terms…again...what we create. In this the Group & I feel quite successful. Again…I tell you this and I mean it sincerely. We never intended to be the biggest band on the planet. We never intended to be the flavor of the month. We never wanted to be all things to all people. We simply wanted to create original Music that would be challenging and hopefully remembered 300 years from now.

5-I personally see Epic Metal like Noblest & Purest style of Metal,an High Celebration of Life in the Quest of the Inner Peace & the Mystic Gnosis & I totally disagree with suppost ”Epic Bands” that are so devoted to the Opposites

ANSWER: I do think that this style of Music is Noble, Beautiful & will become Eternal! I am not really sure that I understand what you mean by bands that are devoted to the Opposites. Do you mean money, fame for its own sake and the likes of which? If so...I agree with you.

6-I have created a personal Vision of Epic-Metal called GOLDEN METAL,an Alchemical Vision of Metal, because the Purest Metal is the GOLD & I see Virgin Steele like a perfect Golden-Metal band, that has created with other Golden bands a New Golden Age of Metal Music with the Passage from Vile to Noble Metals,a Transmutation of Alchemical & Opposite Elements,creating a Third & Renewed Element. Do You agree?            

ANSWER: I thank you kindly for your most Noble words, and I am honored to be thought of in such a high minded way. Mille Grazie! I do love what we have achieved, and I am proud of our accomplishments, and I still have a whole lot more that wish to explore both Musically & Lyrically...

As regards transmutation and new third elements combining from 2 opposite entities...well this is something I have been going on and on about for eons now on record and in interviews since day one......One of my earliest attempts at sorting out these ideas was the NOBLE SAVAGE album. As regards the "quest" or some of the hunger or Spirit that drives us on...well if you are familiar with the "Bio" I wrote there is a section in there which reads:

"With our music we wish to invoke the spiritual nature locked within all men and women. Our thoughts hearken back to an older Pantheon of Gods and Goddesses, such as Dionysus, God of the vine, and Demeter, Goddess of the grain, Earth Mother and spirit of fertility. It is our believe that all religions/ myths speak essentially about the same occurrences. There may be differences in dialect, syntax, or phrasing, but the fundamental beliefs are all the same. Just as with language, there are different words or dialects, but we are all expressing the same ideas and communications.

It is our dream to convey through the music, a feeling of Power & Divinity in oneself, and a feeling of togetherness with all people on this planet, as well as a strong sense of personal freedom and spiritual well-being. Music is the great unifier and universal language. It crosses all boundaries. On stage we are striving to commune with the Infinite, searching for that spark where the Lifestream touches Eternity!!!

We yearn for that moment of exultant Glory, where we and the audience transcend. It is raw, sexual, earthy, spiritual, yet tangible. Everyone should come away from the show feeling transformed - something new has come into the room that was not there before we began playing. Ultimately, we wish to smash through the barriers of ignorance, and reach that Divine place of Freedom, where you can go out on a limb and become a God or Goddess. A Journey to transport one through Chaos to Enlightenment and Beauty!!! . . . THAT IS THE GOAL !!!"

7-My favourite albums of VS are the Two Marriage &”Invictus”,the beginning of the New & Actual Era of the band.The title”The Marriage…”is the same of the Epic,Philosophical,Mystic Blake’s Masterpiece,my favourite work of the Great Bard.I know that you knowed only”Songs of Innocence & Experience”of  Blake at the times of the first chapter,but I have noticed that in the second part you have used some phrases  inspiring by the Blakian Vision like”Virtue comes from Impulse not from Rules!”(“Devil/Angel”). What’s your about
the Brilliant & the Ingenious  English Poet & what’s his influence on your thought?     

ANSWER:  Those albums are not based on Blake. I came up with that title long before I ever heard of Blake's work. I did not hear about his poem until we were finishing "The Marriage" Part 2 album. We had recorded Part 1, and most of Part 2 already, when we had to change the drummer. It was upon meeting Frank Gilchriest and getting him into the band, that I first heard about Blake's poem. Frank was the one who told me that it existed. I was handing Frank a copy of THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN & HELL Part 1, so he could learn some of the tracks, in order to come down and audition for us, and he said..."oh William Blake", and I said, "huh? what do you mean"? And he explained that Blake had written this poem entitled The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell. At that point in time I was only aware of Blake's poem "The Songs Of Innocence & Experience", and that is it. I came up with the title, THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN & HELL on my own, because I wanted to discuss opposites and how to reconcile differences. I wanted to make an album about putting together all the kinds of things that are not supposed to go together, and I thought to myself..."what title can best sum up an idea about opposites" and my reply to myself was, "why THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN & HELL of course", as I wanted to discuss opposites and how they could be integrated, made to combine and give birth to a new "third" element. And that is what I meant by that title. After Frank informed me that such a Work by Blake existed...I could not resist the temptation to go and read it. I did and found that it could be construed as having some sentiments in harmony with my own Work. The track Devil/Angel was the one track that remained unfinished lyrically, so yes that one track was in part inspired by his poem, and in part inspired by certain relationships I had at the time with various women who drove me crazy...

All my lyrics are based on life experiences. I try to keep the lyrics somewhat vague, so the listener can read their own life inside them, and utilize the words and music as part of the "soundtrack" to their own lives.

 8-I know that you like Poets like Byron,Baudelaire,the named Blake,Milton,

Dante Alighieri,Homerus, Shelley,Keats & composers & pianists like Wagner ,
Lizst,Chopin,Verdi,Debussy  & the specific Romanticism like cultural & artistic movement.I see the noblest Epic-Metal like a form of Modern Romanticism,because there’s a great exaltation of human capacities like the Imagination,Spirituality & Sentimental Virtues,in opposition with the Illuminism,that we can see in this actual times like the Dominion of Science & Technology : you agree with me?  

 ANSWER: I am a fan of the Romantic school of ideas, and I do prefer older methods of communication as opposed to the new facebook, etc...living life online mentality. But I am not against science and technology as it benefits our understanding of the World and where we came from. I love the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, sociology, and I am all for new achievements in medical science...What I dislike is the internet's pervasive scrutiny, viral noise and the computer driven lifestyle...I don't appreciate how many people have no time for actual communication, real dialogue or understanding. I don't enjoy a "sound-bite world", and I don't appreciate the fact that many people can not accept a new idea or a difference of opinion. I think the internet, rather than introduce or foster new ideas, more often makes us look for confirmation of our beliefs, instead of exposing us to a new concept...

9-We are come to the end of this particular interview.This magazine has a clear Spiritual Direction. What’s your Idea of God & Spirituality?   

ANSWER: If I had to put a name to what I am...it would be closer to Pagan than anything else. I believe in the cycles, and rhythms of Life and I try to adhere to that ever changing journey. We are most definitely the stuff that the stars are made of...Science has more than proved this...and we are also something not so easily defined...something instinctively felt...and ever present...but not always tangible or quantifiable...nor need it be...it simply...is...That is the Magick part...We can be Gods...Goddesses or whatever we wish to be...

I believe in what Nature tells me...I see God & Goddess in all things...to quote one of my songs...CROWN OF GLORY..."What was forbidden now is open...the Golden Apples of the Sun...all that's alive consider holy...body & soul are reconciled...And Heaven & Hell remember their love and every road leads me to you...to truth...."...

I give you a trace:if God forgives who forgives God for the Evil in the World(& sometimes in the Nature)? 
 I personally think that Evil is Necessary to the Human Existence & Human Progression,but we need to fight to conquer our Personal Demons:it’s a Spiritual & Intellectual War.

ANSWER: In my opinion...there is no need for forgiveness...Nature is what it is...it is outside the sphere of good or evil....God is another story...Life has always been about, and will always be about struggle, strife, conflict, dissonance & harmony, Rebellion, Freedom...Love, Hate, Death & Resurrection...

Bonus Question

10-Tell me about your Theatrical Experiences.

ANSWER: I have had the good fortune to be able to have had 3 "Metal-Opera" type Works performed onstage in a full Theatrical incarnation. The first was called KLYTEMNESTRA and was based on THE HOUSE OF ATREUS albums. The second "Opera", was called Hel Oder Die Rebellen, and was based on the 2 MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN & HELL and INVICTUS albums...The last was titled "Lilith" and was based on the VISIONS OF EDEN album. All 3 were presented in Germany by the LandesTheater Scwaben, and were very well received with over 50 performances each. If we ever eventually do this DVD...I will include some pieces from these Works so people can understand what we did there.

11-What’s the Plans for the Future? 

ANSWER: We will start to re-issue some of the VIRGIN STEELE Catalogue over the next months, and also continue recording what will be the next new album, plus issue some rare musical bits...hopefully the DVD...a live album, and of course perform many more concerts.
